Short Staff? No Prob…

The days of a live staff member in every day part are far behind us. For that matter, the days of a live staff member in more than one day part are far behind us, so what are you to do when you’re one or two staff members have to provide for all the content for not only a station, but also for a website as well?

So here comes the first CDM weekly segment. Every Wednesday, I will post three ways to get content on your site with limited to no staff. Some of these will require very little lifting on your part and others will require heavy lifting, but I will make sure that the heavy lifting ideas are also the ones that will pay off with the biggest dividends.

1.) YouTube Favorites – Take a few minutes to set up a YouTube channel for the station. Create a custom player in the Profile section of your channel. Make sure that the custom player is pulling from your Favorites list. This should take no more than fifteen minutes and will set you up with great content…how? Well, once you have this set up, keep your computer always logged in to your YouTube channel. When someone sends you a funny video or you come across one on your own, mark it as a favorite and it will instantly be populated into your custom player. Take the player and embed it somewhere on your website and make sure there is a link to it from the homepage and in no time you’ll be aggregating content to your site without even thinking about it.

2.) Homepage Twitter: Don’t have time to blog? That’s ok. Embed a twitter widget onto your homepage and Micro-blog. You can do this on the go from your phone. You can do this from twitter.com. You can only blog in 140 characters or less which will force you to be concise and take up very little of your time. Don’t just blindly post, but make sure it’s something compelling for your audience and you’ll have some great content on your site in no time.

3.) PollDaddy.com – If you’re website doesn’t have a built in polling tool, utilize Polldaddy.com to set up polling on the site. Take some time and schedule them out a couple weeks in advance so you always have something fresh on the site and then drive people to take your poll. Once you have a system down, these should be even easier to post. One caveat with this, make sure you set reminders in your mail program to update them otherwise you’ll forget and go two to three weeks without an update. If your website already has polling set up, it’s even easier for you.

Take these three quick steps to aggregating content to your site and you’ll have plenty to talk about on the air and for people to check out online in no time.
